auto electrical system
Your auto electrical system is more than a bunch of wires. You have relays, fuses, fuse blocks, resistors and connectors, to name just a few. It also includes your battery, your lights and gauges. Nothing can bum you out more than when something electrical goes wrong. Suddenly headlights don’t come on, blinkers start blinking crazy, gauges go nuts and you have no idea what is happening. But the workers at Elkhart Mechanics have the tools and the knowledge to make short work of all your electrical needs. They can track down that loose wire, blown fuse, bad connection and figure it out quickly and efficiently. Soon you’ll be driving down the road and all the gauges, lights and turn signals will be in working order.
Your car contains several electrical systems. Everything from your car’s engine to its windows, its windshield wipers, and even its phone charger depends on electricity. A loss of voltage or of circuit continuity can cause any of these to malfunction. While some automotive problems are fairly simple to diagnose and repair on your own, it is not recommended to attempt to repair your car’s electrical systems unless you have the proper tools and safety equipment, because of the risk of coming into contact with high levels of electricity. If your car is having electrical problems, one of the first things we will do is check the car’s battery and fuses, since these can be the source of many electrical problems. A bad battery can also affect the car’s computer system and all the parts it controls. Some problems can be resolved just by cleaning the battery terminals or tightening its connections. If the battery and fuses are in good condition, we will also do a voltage drop test. This test measures the voltage at various parts of the circuit to determine where the circuit is losing electricity. The abnormal flow of electrical current through a circuit is called a short circuit, and it means that one part of the circuit is getting too much electricity, leading to damaged parts that sometimes even look physically burned. We will also check the coils and switches of your car’s relays. In more recent models of cars, a parasitic draw is another potential problem, which happens when the car is turned off for long periods of time. We can perform a parasitic draw test and make the necessary repairs. Whatever the problem with your car’s electrical system, Elkhart Mechanics is equipped to resolve it. We will always be straightforward with you about what the problem is and how to fix it. |
